How an excavator is shipped: container, flat rack or Ro-Ro

How a machine is shipped depends on three dimensions and on whether it can move under its own power.

Port cranes loading a vessel

An excavator is not quoted like a container of general cargo. The first thing we ask for is the data sheet with length, width, height and operating weight.

In a container

Small machines fit in a 40' High Cube, sometimes with the boom or cab removed. It is the cheapest and best protected option.

On a flat rack or open top

If the machine exceeds the sides or the top, it travels on a flat rack, a platform with end walls only. The extra space it takes is charged, because it displaces other containers.

On a Ro-Ro vessel

If the machine rolls or moves on tracks, it can drive onto the vessel over a ramp. Not every route to Colombia has this service, so it depends on the origin.

What is often forgotten

Lashing (the securing that holds it in place) and transport in Colombia. A tall or wide machine needs a lowboy trailer, permits and sometimes an escort to leave the port.

With the data sheet and the origin we can tell you which equipment it travels on and the end-to-end cost.
